This week, the Creators Society is shining the spotlight on the Development Branch’s own Izzy Holder.

Originally from Virginia, Izzy studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and attended graduate school at the Academy of Art in San Francisco with a focus on art and animation. Currently, Izzy is a freelance storyboard artist, but he also does 3D animation.

He spends a lot of his freetime drawing, but he also enjoys getting away from the computer, to camp and go hiking. Izzy also likes to write, and he is currently working on a pilot in the style of Rise of the TMNT named “Pastafazole.” His current goal is to be a showrunner of his own series and to produce a serialized comic book.

Izzy takes a lot of his influences from anime. Some of his favorites include Neon Genesis Evangelion, Monster, From the New World, Demon Slayer, and Parasyte. “I saw the Demon Slayer movie in a theatre recently; that’s definitely the level I want to work at!” he said.

Izzy found The Creators Society through Facebook, “I must have stumbled upon the page and saw they were doing in-person networking events. I went to one and was impressed that people actually showed up. I became a member shortly after.” His favorite thing about the Society is our variety of events, and he had high praise for how we managed to engage with the community during the lockdowns last year.

Izzy has a lot to say when it comes to learning outside of school. “One thing that I learned after school was that education doesn’t stop. You might have graduated, but you still have to keep up with the challenging technology or furthering your own skills.”  He has taken a few extra curricular courses, especially when he made the switch from 3D-Art to Story-Art. He also took classes with a mentor.

Izzy recommends finding a group of people that you can help with your art. He is part of an art collective for storyboarding, where members share ideas and encourage each other to finish projects.

In closing, Izzy’s big advice for someone trying to be a story artist is “keep at it!” and “The simplest thing is to hone your craft, keep meeting people, and to not be discouraged by rejection. Don’t give up, and don’t take it personally when you put yourself out there!”
